§00Field guide
A better clip gets you a better report. Here's how to set up your phone for every stroke and lift, in under a minute.
§01The five rules
- 01
Side-on
Film from the side unless the guide says otherwise. It shows depth, hinge, contact and follow-through.
- 02
Whole body
Head to feet in frame, with a little room. For strokes, keep the paddle in shot too.
- 03
Hip height
Phone level with your hips. Too low or too high distorts every angle.
- 04
3 to 5 metres
Far enough to fit you in, close enough to see your joints. Use zoom rather than walking closer.
- 05
Good light
Light on you, not behind you. Avoid filming straight into the sun.
§02Step by step
Step by step
STEP 01
Pick the move
Choose the stroke or lift in the app so the coach knows what to look for.
STEP 02
Set the phone
Prop it side-on at hip height, 3 to 5 metres away. Lean it on a bottle, a bag or a bench.
STEP 03
Frame yourself
Check you're fully in shot at the top and bottom of the movement.
STEP 04
Use the timer
Set the self-timer, walk into position and wait for the beep.
STEP 05
Do one clean rep
One shot, or one set. About ten seconds is plenty.

§04Clips that go wrong
- ✕Filming from the front when depth or hinge is what matters.
- ✕Cutting off your feet, or the paddle at the top of the swing.
- ✕Shooting into the sun so you become a silhouette.
- ✕Starting the recording halfway through the movement.
- ✕Someone walking between you and the phone.
